Session 13 — A Triad of Awakening

Surahs 102, 103 & 104

Three divine messages that expose the human condition and call us to wake up before time is squeezed out: the trap of endless rivalry, the loss within time itself, and the ruin of hoarding and mockery.

سورة التَّكَاثُر

Surah At-Takathur — The Rivalry in Worldly Increase

Meccan · 8 Ayahs · Juz' 30 · Surah 102

1

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ

Vying for more distracted you

2

حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ

until you visited the graves.

3

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

But no! You will come to know.

4

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Once again: But no! You will come to know.

5

كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ

But no! If only you knew with the knowledge of certitude:

6

لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ

you will certainly see purgatory.

7

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ

Then you will certainly see it with the eye of certitude.

8

ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ

Then, on that day, you will certainly be asked about (worldly) bliss.

سورة الْعَصْر

Surah Al-'Asr — Time

Meccan · 3 Ayahs · Juz' 30 · Surah 103

وَالْعَصْرِ

By time,

2

إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ

indeed, mankind is in loss,

3

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ

except for those who believe, do righteous deeds, enjoin one another to truth, and enjoin one another to patience.

سورة الْهُمَزَة

Surah Al-Humazah — The Slanderer

Meccan · 9 Ayahs · Juz' 30 · Surah 104

1

وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ

Woe to every scorner and mocker,

2

الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ

who amasses wealth and (constantly) counts it,

3

يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ

thinking that his wealth will make him immortal.

4

كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ

But no! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.

5

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ

And what can make you realize what the Crusher is?

6

نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ

It is the fire of Allah, eternally kindled,

7

الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ

which rises over the hearts.

8

إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ

Indeed, it will be closed down upon them

9

فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ
